Artist talk is part of the exhibition I as it, or stones that vibrate.
Orford Ness is a fragile landform on England’s south coast whose ecological complexity has been shaped by its military past. Now a site of Special Scientific Interest and designated nature reserve, between 1913 – 1983 it was owned by the UK Ministry of Defence and operated as a military testing site during both world wars and the Cold War.
The site was selected as the location for one of the earliest experiments in long-range radio navigation in the early 1930s, and then in the late 1970s and early 1980s it was re-used for the Orfordness transmitting station, a powerful medium wave radio station.
Rachel Pimm and Graham Cunnington’s collaborative 2-part video work, an earshare / to cassay the earthcrust (2021), responds to Orford Ness’ complex landscape, tracing its material and invisible histories.
In this artist talk, Rachel Pimm will discuss the ways in which they work with matter to unearth connections, stories and associations that question how images, sound and language code our understandings and ways of ordering the world around us.
Rachel Pimm works with words, objects and photography to research material stories with a focus on the animal, vegetable and mineral as they transform. Recent UK based work, most of which is collaborative, has been in programmes including The Serpentine Galleries, and Whitechapel Gallery. Residencies include Loughborough University Chemical Engineering, Gurdon Institute of Genetics at Cambridge University, Rabbit Island, Michigan, USA, and as Whitechapel Gallery Writer in Residence 2019-20. They
are Associate Lecturer at Camberwell College of Art and have a forthcoming exhibition with Arts Catalyst in Sheffield, UK.
ERSTE Foundation is main partner of tranzit.
Supported using public funding by Slovak Arts Council.
