What can material experiences teach us about the ways we might privilege specific embodied encounters? What wisdom do materials bear? Do materials have memory? Can materials alone be creative? What can they produce and generate? Are we able to understand their language spoken in atoms and molecules? Can we relinquish the idea of artistic practice as mastery over the material?
These questions encourage a deeper connection with the materials we come across on a daily basis and work with, inviting reflection on their voice, history, and potential for artistic expression. The workshop is aimed to playfully experiment with making objects that create their own form through the associations and histories of their materiality. We will investigate space/time/matter/energy entanglements, discuss where the boundaries of implication and substance are held within the objects we create and will finally attempt to think about what it means to be part of a world that we are trying to understand.
Anetta Mona Chişa’s artistic practice usually takes place under the form of dialogues and collaborative working, exploring performative materialities of environments and technologies, their poetics and politics. The artist is attuned to the idea of shifting systems of reference, of the necessity of change and adaptive reasoning to a world whose boundaries are more and more constrained to an idea of the market, of capitalist axioms and an almost mystical digitalization.
Her individual works and collaborative projects have been presented at Galerie Rudolfinum Prague, Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst Bremen, Cukrarna Ljubljana, n.b.k. Berlin, Karlín Studios Prague, Kunstraum Niederösterreich Vienna, The 8th Floor in New York, MSUM Ljubljana, Lunds Konsthall, Haifa Museum of Art, Anca Poterasu Gallery Bucharest, Museum of Contemporary Art Wroclaw, Bozar in Brussels, KINDL Center for Contemporary Art in Berlin, MoCA Miami, MuMoK Vienna, The Power Plant Toronto, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, at the Venice Biennale, Taipei Biennale, Art Encounters Biennale and the Moscow Biennale among others.
