Language as action: The Open Culture! platform between expertise and activism

Normalization, the 1990s, darkness, autocracy … How to speak clearly about the extremely destructive nature of the steps taken by the current leadership of the Ministry of Culture, while avoiding imprecise terms, concepts, and parallels? Since its inception, Open Culture! has been looking for a way to name, frame, and explain the steps taken by the current leadership of the Ministry of Culture. Its practice has also included the creation of solidarity with those who were most affected by the changes or who were subjected to attacks by the leadership of the ministry. This presentation will focus on language practices that generate an analysis of events in Slovak culture as a specific historical situation, but also on the meaning of language as an illocutionary process that can lead from words that speak to the actions of others. The presenters will share their experience in creating texts for Open Culture! and touch on the practices of other protests in Slovakia and abroad. They will also describe the importance of gender-inclusive language in the protest movement, the pitfalls of metaphors and historical parallels, and specific decisions in the creation of Open Culture! campaigns.
Katarína Mišíková is a film theorist and associate professor at the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. She comments on contemporary film theory, contemporary Slovak film and issues of realism and has been published in several domestic and foreign magazines. She is a lecturer at the Film Department of the Lumière Cinema. She is also a member of the Cultural Strike committee.
Dominika Moravčíková is a writer and curator from Strečno. She has a degree in musicology from Charles University in Prague, where she is pursuing her doctorate. Since 2024, she has been an editor of the Artalk portal and a member of Open Culture!. She lives in Košice, where she is involved in the Tabačka Kulturfabrik and Úsmev cinema projects.
Júlia Vrábľová is a researcher at the Ľ. Štúr Institute of Linguistics of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Counsellor for Education and Integration of Foreigners at the Ministry of Education Development and Youth. As a representative of the Slovak Republic in the European Federation of National Language Institutions, she focuses on language policy and the relationship between language and power and ideology in her research with special interest is linguistic justice, including plain language management. She has been part of several research teams dedicated to ideology, desinformation, multilingualism and plain language in strategic communication of state. She worked as a research and teaching assistant in the centre of Slovak as a foreign language at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava.
