Jewelry-Making Workshop as an Act of Self-Identification

Text Information/
Picture Gallery/

Of Another Metal is a workshop that reflects on transformation as a fundamental state of being. Tin, seemingly stable and unambiguous at first glance, relinquishes its solidity when exposed to heat and enters a liquid state in which the boundaries of form are disrupted and the possibility of another shape emerges. It loses its limits and certainties in order to settle again into a new form. This state between form and formlessness mirrors inner processes in which identity is born, questioned, and reshaped. Within the space of the workshop, a physical phenomenon becomes a metaphor for personal experience: the pressure of social norms, fragility, resilience, and the ability to accept one’s own changeability. Jewelry thus comes into being not only as an object, but as a materialized trace of a process in which fluidity turns into form – not a definitive one, but a temporarily truthful one. To be “of another metal” here does not mean to be harder or stronger, but to be capable of undergoing change again and finding one’s own form.

LIGHT* is a student collective operating primarily at Comenius University in Bratislava. Since 2019, it has been creating a safer and more inclusive space for queer people and their allies through community events, workshops, and educational activities at the university and beyond. Since 2022, it has organized an annual Queer Festival at the Faculty of Arts and operates on anti-authoritarian, non-hierarchical principles. We insist that the struggle for the emancipation of queer people cannot be pursued in isolation, as different forms of injustice are inherently interconnected, and none can be fully overcome without addressing the others as well.

Kristína Červencová studies jewelry at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. In her work, she focuses primarily on metal, which she often combines with biological and natural materials that she perceives as carriers of fragility, memory, and natural processes. Her practice is largely intuitive and impulsive, arising in response to an immediate feeling, memory, or visual stimulus. Personal memory and specific situations that resonate with her play an important role in her work and are subsequently transformed into jewelry. Through her practice, she seeks to capture and convey her own memories, moods, and sensations, while also exploring the boundaries of materials and the possibilities of their combinations. She is interested in the materials that can be used in jewelry and how they can carry meaning, emotion, and personal narrative.
