♦ Protest as a tool for social change – organizing protest in practice ♦
♦ Talks by Verona Němcová, Adam Straka and Daniel Vadas ♦
/ March 13 2025 / 6 p.m. / @tranzitsk / Beskydská 12, Bratislava /
In 2024, as the Open Culture! initiative, we organised more than 20 public protests. From a creative yoga protest in front of Bibiana, to simultaneous protests in 14 cities across Slovakia, to a protest march across Bratislava with more than 9,000 people.
Most of us had no previous experience in organizing protest rallies. So many of the protests were created on the go, often with the help of other initiatives that provided us with advice, equipment and contacts.
This talk will present a practical guide to organising protests of different types: from legislative obligations, to planning dramaturgy and performance opportunities, to working with volunteers. We will point out factors to be aware of, even if they cannot be controlled, and the mistakes that have been made when organising public gatherings.
Last but not least, through an evaluation of protests that have taken place, we will clarify our perspective on what makes a protest successful and what goals it can and should pursue. The outcome will be a practical overview for anyone who wants to actively contribute to civic action.
