The lecture will be conducted in English

In 2000, one year after it was founded by Anton Lederer and Margarethe Makovec,
< rotor > opened its first art space in the section of Graz where this centre for contemporary art is still based today. From the very beginning, it has also kept in mind the public realm in the Annenviertel, which throughout the centuries was one of the most important quarters for immigration to Graz as well as a core housing area for the working class in the times of industrialization. The long-term project “The Art of Urban Practice” has been sketched out by a multi-disciplinary team since 2008 in order to deal with the possibilities of participation and artistic projects in the neighbourhood’s public and social spaces.

In his lecture, Anton Lederer will report on the different project strategies that < rotor > has pursued and experimented with. At its core, the intention has always been to communicate with the local population, residents, businesspeople and users of the surrounding public space.

“We have always been and will remain interested in knowing what the people on-site think about the ongoing transformations in the area. What we have attempted to do in all our project modules was to employ methods of communication and to create situations where artists and cultural workers, theoreticians and activists, could meet with local residents, businesspeople, and passers-by at eye level.”

And one of the main questions in all of these endeavours still remains: In which form can artistic production in public and social spaces be laid out so that they support the tendencies of empowerment within the population?

Anton Lederer was born in Graz in 1970. In 1994, he started to present art to the public in his own home. One year later, Margarethe Makovec and he started the first initiative known as “Raum für Kunst”. Then, in 1999, they founded < rotor > and have run this centre for contemporary art in Graz ever since. Their programme concentrates on socially and politically relevant art production and they have developed a focus on co-operation with the art scenes of Central, Eastern and South-eastern Europe. The public and social realms play an important role in reaching an audience that does not cross the threshold into the art space and in discussing subjects of social transformation in the public space.
